Bots Are Using Social Media Platforms to Spread Disinformation

Russia is aggressively exploiting the coronavirus pandemic to push disinformation and weaken Western society using its bot army, EU security services have warned in a recent report.

Social media platforms are the unmeant enabler of disinformation due to their widespread reach. Today when the entire humanity is fighting a life-threatening pandemic, misinformation disseminated through social media platforms is making the situation even worse. Cybercriminals and nation-state actors such as Russia are using bots to exploit coronavirus fears and gain from it.

63.6% of bots in March could mimic human behavior. This means they can disguise their identity and can create fake accounts on social media sites to post as genuine users.

Bots Are Searching for Sanitizers and Face Masks on E-commerce Platforms

As the coronavirus pandemic intensifies, many local administrations have made it mandatory to wear masks in public areas and advising to wash hands regularly or use hand sanitizers. With the growing demand for face masks and hand sanitizers, e-commerce firms are witnessing an unprecedented surge in automated traffic. The reason behind a sudden jump in automated traffic could be cyber criminals’ attempt to hoard essential products to sell in black markets or scrape product details to list similar products on malware-ridden sites.

32.9% of traffic was bad bot on e-commerce platforms in March. Thousands of these bots were found searching for sanitizers and face masks.

Cybercriminals Are Scraping Coronavirus Related Articles

Malicious actors are always in search of opportunities to scam people. So much so, they won’t let go of any significant event, whether it’s a natural calamity, a pandemic, or a celebration. Coronavirus is, in this respect, no different than other events. Cybercriminals are targeting media and digital publishers to scrape coronavirus related content. They are then publishing scraped content on malware-ridden shady websites to scam visitors.

28.1% of traffic on media sites was bad bot involved in automated activity, including scraping in March.
