At ShieldSquare, we know that bots heavily target business-critical web pages across our client base, especially login, site search, product and search listing pages, as well as checkout and payment processing pages. To compare how these pages across various industries are attacked by bots, we compiled aggregated statistics on groups of websites from six industries — E-commerce, Media & Publishing, Social Networks, Online Travel Agencies, Classified Ads, and Real Estate.

We then correlated the key business problems caused by bot attacks with the observed symptoms. These attacks cause a range of business problems such as theft of valuable content, card fraud, lowered search rankings, poor user experience, unavailability of inventory, and skewed analytics, to name just a few.

The report details the telltale signs that indicate malicious attacks by sophisticated bots on websites, apps, and APIs, providing an overview of the harm they cause to businesses. It also serves to highlight the need for advanced bot mitigation solutions to protect against bots that mimic human behavior and cannot be detected by conventional security measures such as Web Application Firewalls, IP blacklists, and rate-limiting systems.

ShieldSquare urges enterprises experiencing these symptoms of bot attacks to evaluate and adopt sophisticated bot mitigation solutions that can uncover the intent behind automated attacks, so that the appropriate actions can be taken on various types of bots.

Read the report for a detailed look at our findings.
